Landing the Plane
We’re sunsetting the “CandyBomber Productions” name and plugging into a new one.
The story of the Candy Bomber has always been at the heart of why I founded CandyBomber Productions. Colonel Gail Halvorsen’s spontaneous act of compassion during the Berlin Airlift—offering two pieces of gum to children who had nothing, and then parachuting candy to them from the skies—carried a message far larger than the sweets themselves. It was a reminder that even in moments of profound hardship, human kindness can cut through fear, division, and uncertainty, and offer profound hope. I chose the name CandyBomber because it embodied a spirit of care, risk taking, and unexpected generosity. Meeting Col. Halvorsen in person at the age of 100 (he lived to 101) only deepened my admiration for him, for the people trapped inside the Berlin Wall whose lives were touched by those candy drops, and for the simple truth at the center of his story, in the Colonel’s own words: “It wasn’t the candy. It was the fact that they were in trouble, and someone cared.”
As meaningful as that story remains to me, the work we are doing today has expanded into new artistic and technological frontiers that call for a name reflecting our evolving mission. The heart of CandyBomber—risk taking, humanity, and acts of connection—will always stay with me, and the story that inspired it continues to guide my values and my work. But it’s now time for a name that more clearly signals who we are becoming: an organization operating at the intersection of dance, music, visual art, gaming and emerging technologies. Tapestry Electric captures the fusion, energy, and multidimensional creativity of the work we make and the communities we gather. It’s not a departure from the Candy Bomber story, but the next chapter—one that honors its legacy while fully embracing the scope and spark of what we create today.
